Dr. James Young,
Medical Director of Pandemic 101™
Dr. Young has been a physician for over thirty years and for many of those years he worked in a government capacity where he could make a greater contribution to the community as a whole. In 1990, Dr. Young became the Chief Coroner for the Province of Ontario and, until his retirement on December 31, 2007, he held a number of positions including Commissioner of Public Safety and Security Ontario and Commissioner of Emergency Management Ontario. For the past three years Jim was seconded to the Federal Government where he worked as the Special Advisor to the Deputy Minister, Public Safety Canada.
In addition to these posts, Jim has been actively involved as the Past President - American Academy of Forensic Science, Past President - International Coroners and Medical Examiners Association and Past President - Toronto Medico legal Society. Jim continues to hold advisory positions and work on numerous boards throughout Canada and the USA. He still travels extensively for External Affairs Canada.
Dr. Young was most notably recognized as the person overseeing the SARS outbreak in Toronto in 2003. In his capacity as the provincial Coroner and Commissioner of Public Safety and Security, Jim was also responsible for managing the ice storm of Eastern Ontario in1998 and the province-wide power blackout in August 2003. He was also in charge of Canada's response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and Canada's aid to nations that suffered from the impact of the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004.
In his role as the Medical Director of Pandemic 101™, Dr. Young has numerous responsibilities that include recruiting and providing direction for the Pandemic 101 Medical Advisory Committee both within Canada and internationally. This committee reviews and maintains the medical accuracy of the Pandemic 101™ Program. Jim is also instrumental in the advancement of pandemic preparedness by working closely with governments, businesses and individuals. Dr. Young, as well as other members of the medical advisory committee, is a regular contributor to the Pandemic News Network (PNN). PNN incorporates a weekly medical column that highlights and in layman's terms explains evolving pandemic issues and concerns and examines how these events may impact the world in which we live.
